- Formative vs summative separation. CBSE Classes 9–10 already split each subject into an 80-mark theory exam and a 20-mark internal assessment (periodic tests, notebook/portfolio, subject enrichment). Your tracking should mirror this so internal marks are recorded through the year, not reconstructed in March.
- Maximum marks and weightage per assessment, so percentages and grades compute correctly.
Layer 2: Attendance
Attendance is the earliest and cheapest predictor of academic trouble. Track it daily and, ideally, period-wise, so it can be laid against subject-wise marks. If your school already automates attendance, feed that data into the same system rather than a separate one.
Layer 3: Teacher observations
Short structured notes — “not submitting homework”, “asks good questions but panics in tests” — recorded per student, per subject. Marks tell you what happened; teacher feedback tells you why.
Layer 4: Student self-assessment

Board and policy context

- Pilot with two or three classes (Month 1). Choose teachers comfortable with technology; fix workflow issues before scaling.
- Train on marks entry only (Month 1). Marks and attendance first; feedback notes and analytics later.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying analytics, using it as a register. If nobody reviews the dashboard monthly, the software becomes a data-entry burden. Assign ownership to a coordinator.
- Tracking only term exams. The value is in the data between terms.
- Keeping attendance in a separate system. The attendance–marks link is the single most useful analysis.
- Over-configuring in year one. Chapter tagging, HPC rubrics and custom reports can wait; consistent marks entry cannot.
- Not telling parents what changed. Parents should know they now get earlier, more granular updates.
